Variable starIts story
In the circumpolar realm of Cepheus beats a yellow-white flame of changing brightness, 379 light-years away. Its light set out around 1647, when Hevelius was publishing his hand-drawn lunar atlas in Danzig. F-type variables tend to pulse with startling precision: that is why, in other contexts, they have served as golden rulers to measure the scale of the cosmos.
