12 Cephei is a red M-type giant pulsing at 458 light-years inside King Cepheus, guardian of the celestial north pole. Its cool, swollen, ruddy atmosphere marks the late chapter of a long thermal journey that has carried it far from the solar state. Cepheus hosts the famous Delta Cephei, prototype of the Cepheids; this giant breathes in the same celestial neighborhood, without pulsating like its renowned companion.
Where it is and when to see it
12 Cepheus lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
