Among the southern feathers of Pavo burns an old red giant, variable, some 412 light-years away. Its light set off toward us when Cervantes was finishing the second part of Don Quixote and telescopes barely existed. It pulses slowly, like a vast tired heart: each oscillation marks the time of a star in its long sunset.

HIP 106044 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
