Gamma Equulei is a peculiar variable star about 118 light-years away, known for its rapid oscillations and for a magnetic field that organises surface elements into unusual chemical bands. In Equuleus —the second-smallest constellation in the sky— it is the main player. A spectroscopic rarity that helps probe the subtle pulse of Ap stars.
Where it is and when to see it
Gamma Equuleus lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
