What is 9 Equuleus

9 Equulei glows reddish six hundred and fifty-five light-years away, in the Little Horse —the second-smallest constellation in the sky, a barely perceptible patch beside great Pegasus. Its M type places it among the coolest stars visible to the human eye, with the deep red of giants that have swollen their atmospheres over billions of years. A tiny constellation, a profound colour.

Where it is and when to see it

9 Equuleus lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
