What is Eta Capricorni
Eta Capricorni is a white type-A star, some 161 light-years away, woven into the gentle outline of the Sea-Goat —half goat, half fish in Babylonian iconography. Its magnitude of 4.8 places it at the very limit of unaided vision in urban skies, but under dark heavens it adds one of the quiet points that close the western contour of Capricornus.
Where it is and when to see it
Eta Capricorni lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
