19 Arietis is an M-type red giant 479 light-years away, a cool ember hanging in the zodiacal Ram. Its surface, far colder than the Sun's, gives it that deep red of stars in their last great chapter. When that light set out, Luther was still debating Erasmus and the conquistadores had barely touched American shores.
Where it is and when to see it
19 Arietis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
