What is Beta Pavonis
Beta Pavonis shines in the southern reaches of the Peacock's tail, a constellation drawn by Dutch navigators when the southern skies were first being charted. It is a blue-white subgiant spinning at seventy-five kilometres per second, still young —only three hundred million years old— pouring out sixty-six times the Sun's brilliance.
Where it is and when to see it
Beta Pavonis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
