π Capricorni inhabits the body of the Sea-Goat, that zodiacal half-circle between Eagle and Southern Fish. It is a triple system about 545 light-years away, dominated by a bright blue-white giant of type B8 II-III, nearly six times the Sun's mass and 238 times its luminosity. It carries a traditional name, Oculus —the eye—, surviving from ancient star lists.
Where it is and when to see it
Pi Capricorni lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
