What is 4 Capricorni

4 Capricorni is a yellow G-type star, a distant cousin of the Sun though more luminous, lying some three hundred and sixteen light-years away. Its light crossed space for three centuries before reaching us, departing when great navigators were still charting the world's oceans. Within Capricornus —the oldest and most modest sign of the southern zodiac— it forms part of the line of faint stars that traces the figure of the celestial sea-goat.

4 Capricorni lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 17° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 27° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 78° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 68° N.

It ranks no. 41 in brightness among the 48 stars of Capricornus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Deneb Algedi, the brightest: it lies about 22° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
