Theta-1 Sagittarii shines more than five hundred light-years away toward the very heart of the Milky Way, in the direction Sagittarius aims its arrow. It is a hot blue-white B-type star, a young flame in a sky region thick with dark dust clouds, globular clusters and stellar nurseries. Every one of its photons crosses an ocean of more distant suns before reaching the human eye.
Where it is and when to see it
Theta 1 Sagittarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
