δ Sagittae is a red giant —of M type— that flickers with gentle variations over months. It marks the center of the tiny Arrow, a constellation as modest as it is ancient, already catalogued by Ptolemy in the 2nd century. Though small in apparent extent, its cool ruby dominates that small northern fragment of the summer sky.
Where it is and when to see it
Delta Sagitta lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
