What is HIP 95865
In Sagittarius, facing the heart of the Milky Way, glows an orange K-type giant 234 light years away. Its light set out while Bach was composing his Goldberg Variations in Leipzig. Cooler than the Sun yet far larger, it pours forth an amber, restful gleam typical of stars that have already left their youth behind.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 95865 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
