What is 14 Sagittarii
14 Sagittarii is an orange K2 giant some 453 light-years away, suspected of microvariability —its brightness wavers by less than three hundredths of a magnitude. It pours out more than three hundred times the Sun's light and rides over the rich stellar field of Sagittarius, the band of sky where we look straight toward the centre of the Milky Way. Its light, set off in the sixteenth century, arrives after crossing fields dense with stars and galactic dust.
Where it is and when to see it
14 Sagittarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
