What is 50 Sagittarii
50 Sagittarii lies far off, toward the centre of the Galaxy, in the direction where the densest star clouds of the summer sky pile up. It is an orange K-type giant whose warm, golden light travels 432 years before reaching us. It set out when Galileo was publishing the Sidereus Nuncius, the first telescopic observations of Jupiter and the Milky Way.
Where it is and when to see it
50 Sagittarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
