What is 37 Draco

37 Draconis is an orange K-type giant 276 light-years away, in the long meandering of the Dragon that coils round the northern celestial pole. K giants like this one have already left the calm of the main sequence and swollen toward stellar maturity, pouring out a warm reddish glow. Its light began the voyage at the start of the eighteenth century, when Newton was still alive and calculus was taking its first steps.

37 Draco lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
