Its light set out around the turn of the first millennium, when Europe feared the end of the world in the year one thousand and the skies were observed in an apocalyptic spirit. Far hotter than the Sun and of fluctuating brightness, its flame resembles the living offering of the mythic altar itself, swinging between blaze and calm.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 87314 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
