What is Fuyue

Fuyue is an orange giant belonging to Scorpius, though its name owes nothing to Western tradition: it was inherited from classical Chinese astronomy, honouring Fu Yue, a legendary sage whom mythology raised to the heavens after his death. At 126 light-years, its coppery glow reaches us from a relatively recent past, carrying the quiet weight of a memory unlike the Greco-Latin one.

Where it is and when to see it

Fuyue lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
