What is Fuyue

Fuyue is an orange giant belonging to Scorpius, though its name owes nothing to Western tradition: it was inherited from classical Chinese astronomy, honouring Fu Yue, a legendary sage whom mythology raised to the heavens after his death. At 126 light-years, its coppery glow reaches us from a relatively recent past, carrying the quiet weight of a memory unlike the Greco-Latin one.

Where it is and when to see it

Fuyue lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 1° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 12° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 87° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 53° N.

It ranks no. 14 in brightness among the 104 stars of Scorpius in our catalogue. To find it, start from Antares, the brightest: it lies about 20° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
