Pipirima is a hot blue star in Scorpius, 474 light-years away, one of the components of the Mu Scorpii pair. Its name comes from Tahitian tradition: two rebellious brothers who, after disobeying their parents, were turned into twin stars and set in the southern sky as a warning. Its burning light crosses the Pacific before reaching our pupils, carrying that ancient moral with it.
Where it is and when to see it
Pipirima lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
