What is Pipirima

Pipirima is a hot blue star in Scorpius, 474 light-years away, one of the components of the Mu Scorpii pair. Its name comes from Tahitian tradition: two rebellious brothers who, after disobeying their parents, were turned into twin stars and set in the southern sky as a warning. Its burning light crosses the Pacific before reaching our pupils, carrying that ancient moral with it.

Where it is and when to see it

Pipirima lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June, when it culminates around midnight.

  • From London it culminates about 1° above the horizon.
  • From New York it culminates about 11° above the horizon.
  • From Sydney it culminates about 86° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 52° N.

It ranks no. 16 in brightness among the 104 stars of Scorpius in our catalogue. To find it, start from Antares, the brightest: it lies about 13° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
