What is Xamidimura

Xamidimura is a hot blue B-class star burning alongside its companion Pipirima in the body of Scorpius, 501 light years from us. Its name comes from the Khoekhoegowab language of southern Africa, where it traditionally designated two watchful eyes in the sky. It is also variable: small pulsations subtly shift its brightness as it sweeps the southern firmament.

Where it is and when to see it

Xamidimura lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 1° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 11° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 86° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 52° N.

It ranks no. 13 in brightness among the 104 stars of Scorpius in our catalogue. To find it, start from Antares, the brightest: it lies about 13° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
