Iota-1 Scorpii burns as a yellow-white F2 Ia supergiant —a rare luminous class shining with around 35,000 times the Sun's energy from 1,930 light-years away. Its swollen radius spans more than 120 solar radii, and its twelve solar masses place it in the quiet catalogue of stars destined for spectacular endings. It also forms an optical pair with Iota-2 Scorpii, two distant beacons in the Scorpion's stinger.
Where it is and when to see it
Iota 1 Scorpii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
