In the claws of Scorpius shines a white A-class star, hotter and more luminous than the Sun, lying some two hundred and thirty-five light-years away. The crystalline light that now defines it set out when European kingdoms were debating the first treaties of the Enlightenment and refracting telescopes were beginning to spread among amateur astronomers. Its bluish-white tone belongs to those young, elegant stars that have not yet begun to age into red giants.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 86847 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
