Variable starIts story
3 Scorpii is a blue B8 subgiant 515 light-years away, a subtle variable whose brightness wavers by barely two hundredths of a magnitude every 1.46 days. It dwells in the Scorpion's tail, the zodiacal constellation whose stinger plunges into the field of the southern Milky Way. Its light set off near the start of the sixteenth century: five centuries crossing the night to reach this precise instant of the sky.
