Variable starIts story
In Ara, the southern altar, throbs a blue variable B-type star more than 1,830 light-years away. Its white-blue light set out around the third century, in the depths of the Roman Empire's crisis, as emperors followed each other amid rival legions. Far hotter and more luminous than the Sun, its brightness rises and falls with time, as if still echoing the unstable pulse of those ancient turbulences.
