Variable starIts story
Ara, the altar of the southern sky where the ancients imagined sacrifices smouldering, hosts this variable red giant 1,113 light-years away. Its light departed around the tenth century, while Persian astronomers such as al-Sufi were cataloguing stars and drawing the first Arab constellations. An M-class flame, cool and trembling, crossing a whole millennium.
