The altar of Ara, a modest southern constellation, holds this white A-type star some three hundred and seventy-nine light years away. Its light peeled away in the years when the Sun King was consolidating Versailles as Europe s political centre. It arrives now, long after that French baroque, to a sky in which other languages are spoken but the same curiosity remains.

HIP 82902 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky.
