What is 27 Scorpii
27 Scorpii is a late orange giant suspended in the scorpion's sting at 948 light-years. Its light has been crossing the void for nearly a millennium — it set out as the first Romanesque cathedrals were still being raised. K-type, the colour of mature embers, magnitude 5.48: the scorpion bears it like a chip of amber between its claws.
Where it is and when to see it
27 Scorpii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
