Within the claws of Scorpius blazes a blue B-type star, young and feverish, far hotter and more massive than the Sun. Its light set out a little over four centuries ago, when Kepler was publishing his three laws of planetary motion and the cosmos ceased to be a perfect circle to become an ellipse. Its blue-white tone belongs to stars that live fast and burn intensely, fleeting on a stellar scale, as if knowing that their time is short even among constellations.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 79199 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
