What is HIP 80672
An orange K-type star lives in Scorpius, that southern figure with sting and claws. Its light set out around 1666, the year of the Great Fire of London, while Newton, isolated by the plague, was working through his Annus Mirabilis. Nearly three and a half centuries later, that orange ember crosses the scorpion's tail and settles on today's detectors.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 80672 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
