What is 9 Herculis
9 Herculis is an orange giant about three hundred and ninety-seven light-years away, in the figure of the kneeling hero holding his club. Its K-type glow, deep and warm as an ember, marks a star that has already exhausted its core hydrogen and swollen to sizes the Sun will only reach billions of years from now. Hercules holds many jewels: this is one of the calmest.
Where it is and when to see it
9 Herculis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
