What is HIP 80008
Eighty-six light-years from here, a yellow-white F-type star adorns the figure of Hercules. Its light set out around 1940, in the middle of the Battle of Britain, when coastal British radar was detecting incoming air formations at great distance for the first time. That F-class glow, indifferent to human wars, arrives today in our instruments like a steady, tempered echo.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 80008 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
