What is Chi Lupi

Chi Lupi burns blue some 195 light-years away, inside the ancient Scorpius-Centaurus stellar association, the closest nursery of young massive suns to the Earth. It is a chemically peculiar B-type star, known for its strange overabundance of heavy elements levitated in its atmosphere by the pressure of its own light. An atomic curiosity dressed in pale fire.

Chi Lupi lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 5° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 16° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 90° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 56° N.

It ranks no. 12 in brightness among the 74 stars of Lupus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Alpha Lupi, the brightest: it lies about 19° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
