What is Kappa 1 Sculptor
Kappa-1 Sculptoris is a yellow-white F-type star in the Sculptor, a faint constellation traced by Lacaille near the south galactic pole. About 253 light-years away, its modest brightness sits in a part of the sky where even the Milky Way’s own glow scarcely interferes with observation: through this window astronomers lean their telescopes toward the deep universe and discover, behind the thin stellar veil, some of the galaxy groups closest to the Solar System, including the very Sculptor group that gives the constellation its modern name.
Where it is and when to see it
Kappa 1 Sculptor lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
