Theta Coronae Borealis is one of the clasps of the diadem that Greek mythology gave to Ariadne after her abandonment on Naxos. A blue type B star some 375 light-years away, it spins so fast that its atmosphere flings rings of gas into space —behaviour typical of so-called Be stars. Its light flickers with subtle variations that betray that circumstellar disc, a private crown nested inside the celestial one.
Where it is and when to see it
Theta Coronae Borealis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
