What is Epsilon Librae

Epsilon Librae inhabits one of the zodiac's most discreet constellations —the only one not representing a living being but an object: the Scales. It is an F-type star about 102 light-years away, slightly hotter than the Sun. Its measured light keeps company, in late-spring nights, with the two bright stars once held in antiquity to be the claws of neighboring Scorpius.

Where it is and when to see it

Epsilon Librae lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May, when it culminates around midnight.

  • From London it culminates about 28° above the horizon.
  • From New York it culminates about 39° above the horizon.
  • From Sydney it culminates about 66° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 80° N.

It ranks no. 13 in brightness among the 49 stars of Libra in our catalogue. To find it, start from Zubeneschamali, the brightest: it lies about 2° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).

The light you see today left it about 100 years ago.
