What is 47 Ceti
47 Ceti is a yellow-white F-type star 122 light-years away, set against the diffuse back of the Whale. Its surface, slightly hotter than the Sun's, lends it a clean tone and a modest naked-eye glimmer at magnitude 5.51. The light settling on the eye tonight set out around the start of the 20th century, when spectroscopy was beginning to sort stars by their chemical fingerprints.
Where it is and when to see it
47 Ceti lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
