80 Ceti is a cool M-class star, deeply red, about 465 light-years away in the outline of the celestial Whale. M stars are the coolest in the stellar catalogue, with mild surfaces and red-dominated light —a rare visual note against the usual white of the field. The light reaching us tonight left in the late sixteenth century, in the age of Tycho Brahe.
Where it is and when to see it
80 Ceti lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
