What is 65 Virginis
65 Virginis is an orange K-type giant about 1,245 light-years away, in the vast constellation of the Virgin —which in the spring sky holds the densest known concentration of galaxies in the nearby cosmos, the Virgo Cluster, with its thousands of members—. Light it emitted around the year 781 crossed the entire Middle Ages before touching Earth. Its warm hue places it in an advanced stage of stellar evolution.
Where it is and when to see it
65 Virginis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
