Within Virgo glows a white A-type variable star 333 light years away. Its light set out when Versailles was opening its Hall of Mirrors and Europe revolved around the court of the Sun King. Hotter and more luminous than the Sun, its brightness sways to its own metre: that slow flicker which astronomy has learned to read as a heartbeat.
