What is 23 Canum Venaticorum

23 Canum Venaticorum is an orange K-type giant about 509 light-years away, in the small constellation of the Hunting Dogs that Hevelius traced in the seventeenth century. Its amber cast places it in a late phase of stellar evolution, already past the main sequence. Its light set out around the start of the sixteenth century, while Copernicus was quietly rewriting the inherited models of the cosmos.

23 Canum Venaticorum lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
