19 Canum Venaticorum stands within the Hunting Dogs —a small constellation introduced by Hevelius in the 17th century, just south of the Greater Bear. It is a white A-type star about 242 light-years away, hotter and brighter than the Sun. Its light slipped free around 1784, during the cataloguing fever of Messier and the Herschels.

19 Canum Venaticorum lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky.
