In Canes Venatici, the hounds the herdsman walks beneath the Great Bear, a rare red M-class giant pulses with variable brightness 695.5 light-years away. Its reddish hue and slow throb mark an aged, enormous star. The light we see departed in the heart of the Italian Renaissance, when Brunelleschi was solving the dome of Florence with a genius that still astonishes.

HIP 63024 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
