Algorab comes from the Arabic 'al-ghurab', 'the raven', and marks the wing of the dark bird that, in Greek myth, betrayed Apollo and was nailed forever to the sky. It is a hot blue star some 87 light-years away, close enough that its cool tone is recognisable on a clear night. The light reaching us now set out around 1939.
Where it is and when to see it
Algorab lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
