Gienah, in the constellation Corvus the Crow, takes its name from the Arabic «janāḥ», «the wing». It is a blue star 154 light-years away, several times hotter than the Sun and wrapped in a turbulent atmosphere mapped by telescopes. Its cold, electric light contrasts with the soft yellow background of nearby stars, like a blue ember kindled in the middle of a brazier.
Where it is and when to see it
Gienah lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
