What is HIP 54840
An orange K-type giant in Centaurus, a sky-neighbour of Alpha Centauri but vastly more distant in space. Its light began its journey around 1602, when the Dutch East India Company was founded and global commerce took its first steps. K-type stars show a warm, amber-like colour, ideal to identify with the naked eye under rural skies free of light pollution.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 54840 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
