In Centaurus shines a yellow star kindred to the Sun, only somewhat older and a touch more swollen. Its light set out in 1933, when the Great Depression was shaking the democracies and Europe was beginning to darken. We see it now as it was then: a distant sun of golden tone, serene, suspended between two epochs and the present night.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 61379 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
