A blue type-B colossus burns in the Keel, Carina, 2,204 light-years away. Its light departed in deep Antiquity, when Caesar crossed the Rubicon and the Roman Republic was nearing its end. Far hotter and more massive than the Sun, this star will live briefly and burn fiercely —a youthful blaze whose message has taken more than two millennia to land among our pupils.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 54829 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
