In the southern depths of Carina burns an orange giant whose light crossed space for more than thirteen centuries. It set out in the High Middle Ages, when Charlemagne was beginning to unify Europe under a new idea of empire. Cooler and many times larger than the Sun, it has already left its youth behind and moves with the luminous calm of mature stars.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 38783 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
