A blue variable giant burns in Carina, the keel of the austral celestial ship. Its light set out around the year 689, when the Umayyad caliphs were spreading Islam across North Africa and China's Tang dynasty was living one of its most fertile cultural periods. The class B star, intensely hot, does not stand still: its brightness shifts in small oscillations that betray the instability typical of young giants.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 38438 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
